Functie
Background
With the increasing importance of having a good overview of space objects in Earth’s orbit, Space Situational Awareness (SSA) has become a major development topic. NLR has been working on an SSA tool to get a better insight in trends and operations of the various satellites and orbiting debris, in order to better understand and predict possible risks, unexpected behaviour and avoid collisions. To make this more understandable and transition towards Space Situational Understanding (SSU), the results of the tool need to be displayed in a coherent and easy to grasp way. For this, a connection with the training department within NLR will be made to merge the two knowledge areas within this internship.
Assignment
The main objective of the assignment is to create visual resources (Extended Reality, XR) that will allow NLR’s industry partners, clients, colleagues, and the general public to intuitively see and understand how we are striving towards SSU, and how our society and industry would benefit from this. One essential SSA technology that’s being developed within NLR is the ability to be aware of satellites that are approaching our own satellites, days in advance. In a VR/AR/MR visualisation where one could look into space from the perspective of our own satellite, it would be much easier to display and elucidate such an approaching spacecraft. In addition, scenarios that relate to other NLR projects (e.g. satellite cyber security, Earth observation, air-launch, satellite payloads) are also in need of visual representations.
Result
The following outcomes of the internship are expected:
- VR/AR/MR visualization of the Earth;
- Either seen from the perspective of a certain satellite, or zoomed out from afar.
- A connection between the SSA tool and a visual representation of its findings;
- A video displaying conceptual NLR projects, based on an existing script, using the created environment;
- A manual detailing the setup and use of the visualization;
- An internship technical report.
Duration
3-6 months (internship)
