The Dutch National Aerospace Laboratory (NLR) is the research and development institute for aerospace in the Netherlands and has a well-known reputation on aircraft design and operations in the Netherlands and abroad. The environmental department of the NLR performs research related to aircraft noise, aircraft pollution and safety for areas around airports.
NLR utilizes the Virtual Community Noise Simulator (VCNS) to research noise annoyance of various sources, such as aircraft, wind turbines, road-and rail infrastructure or industrial noise. An important contribution to experience noise is the visualisation that is presented using Oculus Rift Virtual Reality glasses, which contributes to an immersive experience. Key to the realistic visualisation is the combination of virtual objects, such as aircraft or wind turbines, with 360 degrees recording of the surroundings. Currently, we see minor and larger differences between the artificial, virtual objects and objects that are recorded with the 360-degree camera. The task of this assignment is to analyse the differences and find solutions that will reduces these differences to improve the level of immersion for the user.
- Following Computer Science education or Game and Media Technology (University).
- Experience with Unity3D game engine. Knowledge of shaders and modelling of 3D object is considered an advantage for this assignment.
- Willing to work in Amsterdam during assignment and preferred start date of assignment: June-September 2017.
